Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT)

Oral appliance therapy, also called (OAT) are plastic devices that are worn in the mouth. The appliance brings your jaw forward to allow more air into the airway. These appliances help Prevent the collapse of the tongue and soft tissues in the back of the throat, keeping the airway open during steep and promoting adequate air intake. Dr. Rena Vakay works with two different oral appliances, the first being the Lamberg Appliance and the second one being The Somnodent. The Oral Appliance can be used alone or in conjunction with a CPAP machine.

Oral appliances are used as a treatment option for patients who have difficulty adjusting to a CPAP machine.

Dr. Rena Vakay has extensive training and certification in oral appliance therapy. At the time of your visit, Dr. Vakay can determine which of the appliances are suited for you. Dr. Vakay and her staff will work with your physician as part of your diagnosis, treatment, and on-going care. The first visit will include a review of your sleep study, and the prescription from your physician. At that time an evaluation will be done to determine the best oral appliance for you.

Advantages of having a Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT)

Oral Appliance Therapy has several advantages over other forms of therapy:

1. Reduction in the frequency and volume of snoring.

2. Improvement in steep quality in most patients.

3. Oral appliances are small and comfortable to wear.
